Jessie (Elisabeth Moss) is a rebellious teenager living in a small town with her conservative Baptist family. After the boy she likes drugs and rapes her, Jessie finds herself pregnant. With no recollection of the sexual encounter, she believes she is carrying the second coming of Christ, a belief that at first enrages and then inspires her, causing violent opposition in her community.
