Dev Anand, among Bollywood’s Golden Age mega-stars, delightfully pulls together this multi-faceted caper-comedy-melodrama, playing Vinay, a jeweler’s assistant romancing the boss’s daughter (Tanuja), and suspected of being a notorious Bombay jewel thief. When a socialite (Vyjayanthimala) claims Vinay is her fiancé, and calls him Prince Amar, the gears of intrigue begin to turn as Vinay snoops out his mysterious doppelganger, while trying to stay a step ahead of the cops. With its elegant blend of wit, sparkle of romance, and dollops of tuneful, colorful song numbers, this is a shining example of ‘60s Bollywood escapism and one of Anand’s smash-hit triumphs.
