"There is a grunting ruthlessness to the drama, a vibrancy of character and moral obstinacy that compare favorably with Akiro Kurosawa's...samurai movies" -- Rita Kempley, Washington Post "An unusually thoughtful and visually stunning movie about women's empowerment." -- Maya Yajnik, Sawnet.org
In a remote and impoverished village in Colonial India, a petty and boastful tax collector (Naseerudin Shah) arrives. His bullying sends the village into a panic, particularly after he sets his sights on Sonbai (Smita Patil), whose husband is away, and demands that she submit to his lustful overtures. He's picked the wrong woman to harass. The headstrong Sonbai stirs up righteous anger among her fellow women, and spearheads her own feminist revolution.
