This movie starts off suicidally depressing, and goes relentlessly downhill from there. It has great songs, but since it covers decades in its story and feels like it does so in real time, those songs do not redeem this gloomy, sullen nightmare. Never has "fade to black" not only lifted my mood so much but also been the happiest, most upbeat part of an entire film. If you are the sort of person who finds Dostoyevsky way too cheerful, this movie's for you. If, on the other hand, you don't like watching movies that make you think being eaten alive by fire ants would be more fun, avoid this and just get the soundtrack. |

It has the subtlety of a sledgehammer, and its core message is simply repellent. How a psychopathic obsessive can be lauded as the perfect child is beyond me. Amitabh and Hema were sweet together, buth this film is one of very few Hindi films, alongside KANK and Black, that getys me really angry and bilious just thinking about it. A truly repugnant and loathsome film, one that I am profoundly sorry I ever watched. |

I had no idea what I was letting myself in for when I first rented this one, since I did so purely to see hothon mein aisi baat, which one-shot wonder many desi friends had raved about. The rest of the film was fun to watch, but I think to be fair to Jewel Thief, I need to see it again, without thinking "when does Vijayanthimala dance?". Jewel Thief is also my favourite Dev Anand movie to date, although I've only seen Johnny Mera Naam, Guide (yawnish) and Swami Dada (cataplexy-inducing), with Kala Bazaar and Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai waiting to be watched. After Hothon mein aisi baat, my favourite song from Jewel Thief is Yeh Dil Na Hota Bechara, which seems reminiscent of both Awaara Hoon and Mera Joota Hai Japani. For those not fans of Dev Anand, I'd say, watch this to give him another chance. Thanks to Carla's excellent review I shall now go out and buy this fine film. |

This is by no means a bad movie, but it's not one of my favourites. It could have been subtitled "The importance of NOT being over earnest", or, less kindly "Don't be a pompous, self-important prat, Dev". That last really refers only to the climax, which is not only a cop-out in terms of Narayan's original story but is also a rather queasy exercise in self-glorification.
I would still recommend watching this movie, and would say that no fan of Hindi "golden oldies" should miss it, but I doubt I'll ever watch it again, except maybe to drool over Waheeda. |
