But true to form, Mr. Blank and his creative partner Gina Leibrecht skillfully pull me into the contagious obsession of David Hoffman - the man who loves Tea. Thankfully, Hoffman and the filmmakers do not overwhelm us with facts, but rather zero in on manually farmed “great teas” as one of life's vanishing pleasures. This film may seem a bit slow and old fashioned to the MTV generation, but young filmmakers who rely on style over substance would be hard pressed to tell a story like this without narration, formal interviews, or fancy graphics. Les and Gina pull it off with such sure handed craft, it should be required viewing for all documentary students. My only gripe is I wished the camera work would have matched the beauty of the score. |
