This film captures the claustrophobic beauty of the Seto Naikai islands. Sagi-
Jima makes a perfect backdrop for Ryuki, whose inertia finds him running in circles, never able to realize his dreams or potential. This work of quiet resonance comes from Rob Nilsson, whose films are known for starting with the jugular and arriving at a brutal but tender beauty. Here however Nilsson starts with poetic reflection that belies the starker truths within Ryuki. - Erika

This film got much better in its second half, when it became more cohesive and the acting more convincing--
good portrayals of insecurity from two actresses. While Lila's extreme paranoia and edginess and Tina's covered-
up loneliness rang very true, Chikako's character is underdeveloped. If it weren't for the beautiful NYC shots, and these jolts of convincing female behavior, I'd have been left with a feeling of complete lassitude.

At first what keeps the film moving is Deneuve's jagged disillusionment and subtle masochism, which coil the beginning scenes in a suspense that offsets its lulls. The character Serge then adds his own taut resignation. These two, who represent the '68 generation, exert on Paul, the GenX protagonist, a centrifugal force that keeps him from facing his own void. Their suffering makes his parasitical self-
distraction pale and uninspired. Deneuve's best lines occur after she meets Serge. Then she can bear her soul to someone whose own has also been singed. -Erika

I love this film because it embeds surrealism in nostalgia, history, and personal narrative. I also love films in which a community is viewed by an outsider who gradually becomes one with its mysteries. For me the side stories at times were more compelling than the protagonist's. Note the restaurant scene at the film's end, and the story of the German boy. Please bring more cinema from Spain! Gracias. - Erika
