I've seen this movie before (many years ago) and just now am appreciating the care with which it was made. Good to see yellow male characters not flinching at expressing sexuality in the presence of white women. Jackie tried in 1980 to break into the Hollywood loop with "The Big Brawl," set in Chicago of the 1930s. Bombed becuz his character had a white girl friend with whom he openly made out on screen. Wasn't the time yet. Today is another story, of course. Chow Yen Fat, Jet Li, Jack Chan, et al can get the white gal, and doesn't die becuz of it, and, on top of that, makes it all the way to the box office. Yeah.
This early, youthy Jackie Chan begins to hint at sheer delight in action scenes defined by his extraordinary comedic physicality. Story line is better than most HK martial arts/action flicks, which usually lack for pacing, surprises that move the narrative along, etc. A fun ride. A real collector's item. |
