This is a gargantuan task, no doubt. Oliver Stone has certainly taken a good stab at this endeavor, and for whatever flaws it has, I was certainly entertained by W. Josh Brolin is masterful to watch in his role as George W. His mannerisms and speech are spot on.
Amongst the supporting cast, I enjoyed the performances of Elizabeth Banks as Laura, and especially Richard Dreyfuss as Cheney. I was also tickled to see Rob Corddry play Ari Fleischer and kept expecting him to start acting crazy like he did in Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo. I didn't enjoy too much Jeffrey Wright and Thandie Newton's performance as Powell and Rice respectively because they felt kinda stiff and strained.
The one question that was running through my mind though, as I was watching W., was whether the real George W. had seen this movie, and if so, how did he - how would he - react to this portrayal of him that even given its effort to be evenhanded, still shows his shortcomings in a harsh light? |
