Although the humor got a bit corny at parts, it never quite delved into 'Something About Mary' territory.
The two leads were good enough, but I felt that the scenes with the Twins fell apart a bit. Penelope felt kind of like the gimpy conjoined twin that ended up with half a spinal column compared to Ariadna's superhero-esque spunk.
At a couple points, the editing and narrative style felt like they were ripped right out of Amelie's play book, but I forgot about that every time they cut back to Serafin's apartment, shared with his father. The art direction, sets, and costumes in this film are just fantastic. I've always been a sucker for mid-century modern. Design geeks, it's worth seeing this just for the textiles, rugs, and cool appliances.
I probably wouldn't have ended up watching this on my own, but for a friday night flick at home with my girlfriend, tubby cat, and fuzzy dog, it was perfect. |

As of this writing, I haven't seen Slingblade, the feature film yet. Why not? I don't know, I don't think I even have a good excuse. I just never got around to it.
I definitely want to see it now. Billy Bob and J.T. Walsh, wow. They're incredible with their respective monologues, bookending this film. I think the thing I really liked the most about this piece is how elegantly spare it is. There is little ornamentation and it feels like everything extraneous has been cut out.
I felt so disappointed when it ended because it's obvious that this film is just a tease, hinting at a much bigger story, the proverbial tip of the iceberg. Too bad the feature length film isn't available on Jaman yet. (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) |
