I spent my teenage years in Taiwan, so I had zero exposure to independent American films. Instead, I discovered Hong Kong action films, including a rising young kung-fu star named Jackie Chan -- back when all his stunts were real. After I returned to the U.S. in the late '80s, my entertainment tastes were forever altered, not by a movie, but by a seminal TV series: "Twin Peaks" by David Lynch.
