Favorite Movies:
Well, so far I have to say it is Swades. I am writing a piece on Indian diaspora identity in which I reference it, and unless I make changes I am still calling it "magnificent." This is despite all the sometimes cheesy conventions of so-called Bollywood movie-making. There are so many moments in these movies that rise to fine art, or my pretentious notion of such! There are of course so many that are ridiculous. Beth knows that I especially love the visuals, and Paheli floored me. Every frame.
Favorite Actors/Actresses:
I have seen a few classics and can definitely feel the greatness of Raj Kapoor and Nargis. The classical music/dancing in MEA and Umrao Jaan also floor me. I really can't say yet for the more contemporary films --- I can say however that I am not much of an SRK fan except for Swades. I think Aamir is the better actor. I don't know if I am capable of cultish idol film star worship! But Gracey Singh and the dancing in the Radha/Krishna & "Clouds" parts of Lagaan hits some heights.
About Me:
OK, Beth Watkins and I met as fellow Fulbright fellows in India, summer '06. I teach high school in Connecticut USA and thanks to Indian (mainly Gujarati) students had some familiarity with Bollywood movies, but only a few (DDLJ, KKHH, and the like). When my daughter was in middle school we had fun watching some together. As of now winter '07 I suppose I have seen a few dozen films. In India everyone said I looked like Shammi Kapoor. For me, yes, it's mainly the singing, the clothing and ornament, the instruments, and dance. Beth says she "wasted 30 years" without having ever seen an Indian movie, I was 56 before realizing that there was such a stunning aesthetic.
