It's one of the few Indian films that enjoy legendary cult status and runs to packed houses even when released today.
The story of two brothers on opposite sides of the law, is told beautifully and along the way there's love, death, song and dances, daring horseback sequences, a nail-biting kabbadi match and, most of all, an enchanting relationship between the classic superstar duo, Dilip Kumar and Vyjayanthimala.
The film won several filmfare Awards and was nominated for several others. Winner Best Actress - Vyajayanthimala, Best Dialogue and Best Cinematography; Nominated for Best film, Best director, Best Actor, Best Music Director.
This is a fantastic film and a great opportunity to experience classic Indian cinema at it's best. Enjoy! |

Much of the noise about the movie centered on her portraying a sensual woman unafraid to kiss passionately (17 times to be precise). It's interesting how, to this day, there is so much hype in Indian cinema about a "sexually expressive" woman. If you watch Chokher Bali - once again the message emerges - sexually empowered women are "dangerous". Food for thought as we pay attention to the role of women in Bollywood films. |
