I watched these shorts and regained a real love of Mira Nair as a director and a person with a voice in the world. I say this since it is easy to Direct Films that are mainstream and appeal to the masses. But taking subject matter that NO ONE wants to hear about and much less acknowledge is really a problem is what takes real guts. This is the person I remember when I looked back at her early films. Films that touched on subject matter that made the masses uncomfortable. Yet made you think about the world outside your comfortable little world. These shorts do that and I hope will help to get across how serious a matter AIDS really is. To think over 20 years this disease has been in the news around the world that there people still who think it can not touch them is frightening. Btw, India is not the only place where it is still ravaging a population without stop. Bravo Mira, for doing an incredible job on what some may think of as just PA's these are worth so much more than Public Annoucement type work.

Watching this film again. Was just as wonderful as the 1st time. I moving film that almost forces you to want to look back at this very painful part of our history.

I must commend you on this short. The images are a bit haunting. But I think the message is not just one for India and South Asian Communities. But for the world as a whole. Every culture on some level cheers more for the birth of a son than that of a daughter.
The amazing part it that it has become fanatical in area such as Punjab. If this doesn't stop the number of female children born will be so small that in order for every man to marry a woman in the state of Punjab she would have to marry more than one man the numbers they say at present would be closer to 4 or 5. Is the the future we want for our female children? Multipule husbands - to be used like a b***h to breed. Having to bare children from many men just so they can carry one thier family name.
Please keep making your voice heard.

Wow... what a major out of the box performance by Kareena. I totally agree Geetanjali ..her acting was so different. I think thids may have been the most daring role she has done. And for a change you see she more than the cute addtion to the story. This is not to say Kareena is not an excellent actress but for a change we get to see the depth of her well of talent.
I did find it funny that last few years there have been a few films about prostitutes... hmmm wonder what thats all about ...

I agree on some of the observations made by Aakash on the realness of the film. I enjoyed this film much more than I expected I would. The rage that Muskan/Mallika has is very real. I have worked with young women that have been abused sexually and the rage is unreal. The want to kill and the inability to be truly intimate with someone after having this type of past.
I like that it does show that no matter what the outside world may see these woman as they are real people that have feelings and do develop bonds with others as family.
As well as the fact that there are clients like Anthony that believe they have a right to do as they wish because the woman is a call girl. His obsession with Lisa, to a point of her death. Think about it if she were dealing with a guy like him and wasn't in her line of work. Even in a film "Lisa" would have gone to the police to complain that this man was harrassing her and she felt endangered. But true to the subject matter; she doesn't instead it ends with her death.
The seconnd half of the film does drag a bit - But I think it was to give a fuller sense that these woman were real people and even someone like Muskan/Mallika might meet the man of her dreams ... or at least he thinks he is.

I really enjoyed watching this film on the american cars in Cuba. It reminded me of another film that had hightlighted the music of Cuba and the bands that came out of Cuba in the 50's as well as the fusion of beats that became known later as Afro Cuban Jazz.
The fusion of homemade parts and the chasis and rebuilt bodies of old America luxury cars pays tribute to the ingenuity of Cuba.
