I had watched Sarfarosh when it had just released 8 years ago. Safe to say i didn't quite remember what I saw (hell, I was only 13). But boy am I glad I revisited it on Jaman.
Many cop dramas now a days are simply high on action, violence, and police vs underground struggles. However, Sarfarosh is different. It not only smoothly portrays the constant struggle between good and evil, it also establishes the very tender and fragile part that religion plays and how the sting of partition still lays fresh on the minds and hearts of many who's lives and lives of their children were eternally altered.
Besides the strong thematic presence, Matthan's execution is absolutely flawless. Sarfarosh is where we see Aamir transform from the boy of Hum Hai Rahi Pyaar Ke, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, into the man that he is today. The script rightly depicts the introduction oft he AK47 into teh hadns of the terrorists and a fight against a steel curtain.
Not to mention that climactic scene between Aamir Khan and Naseeruddhin Shah is absolutely brilliant. A must watch for all!

Wow! You find it hard to believe that this is the same Ketan Mehta who created the questionable Mangal Pandey (2005). Nonetheless, Mehta takes a very brave step to highlight the plight of colonialism and the religious crossroads that show social unbalance.
Naseerudhin Shah and Smita Patil adorn this very modern-
esque film (although made in the 1980s), while Mehta writes with a steady hand. A very fine film in all regards. Must Watch!

Mammo, although not one of Benegal's most expressive works, is a film true to its theme. It is a script (Khail Mehmood) that discusses the nature of mankind to always return to their roots, at whatever costs.
Performances were brilliant by the three leads (Farida Jalal, Surekha Sikri, and Amit Phalke). Benegal is able to delve into the characters lives as if they were his own...etching a simple yet revealing image. His voice echos through the emotive performances of hte leads, who brilliantly essay their roles.
All in all, this film is another feather on the already very well-
ornamented cap of Mr. Shyam Benegal

workers (especially in the software/technical support fields) should watch. Although cut very short, the documentary provides a very accurate window into the lives of the other side.
People need to know the truth, and realize that people aren't out to "steal" their jobs. As I note in the film itself, they should recall that American Companies are the ones giving the jobs to Indians....Indi
an's aren't really stealing anything.
Nonetheless, it's quite extraordinary to witness one of the most gigantic social booms in the world during the past 2 decades in the city of Bangalore. Fantastic Documentary!

FIrst and foremost, I'd like to compliment Raghu Jeganathan on coming up with a very appropriate title for the film. These rikshawwallas really are full of burden, physically mentally and emotionally.
The documentary focuses on testimonicals from the rickshawwallas themselves. It's quite difficult to swallow some of the harsh realities these guys face, like living off of $1/day. The documentary does a wonderful job in showing us how the other half of India lives.
However, I wish there was a bit more narration to inform as opposed to the on-
going encounters with the rickshawwallas. But this can easily be over-
looked when you meet such cyclists as "Rikshaw Mama," who is a lower-
class driver but finds it in his heart to go out of his way to take take care of orphans and disabled children. A true hero.
Bravo for a great window into another unique part of India's very diverse community.

What a vivid film this is! Pamela Rooks is able to create such a tender moment in Indian history with utmost respect, sympathy, and skill. the film beautifully illustrates the tenderness of cross-
border ties, and how they can transform a tranquil placid environment into a gory battlefield.
Apart from a solid script, the film should be appreciated for it's stellar cast all of who slip into character ever so easily. Although the cinematography was not as sharp, and the angles weren't as telling as they could have been, the film deserves high marks for its treatment. I have actually read the book, and this is one film that does do justice to its origins! Well Done

I was absolutely blown away by this film and Shyam Benegal's dedication to it. Much has been told and heard about Gandhiji's experiments with truth after returning from South Africa in India, but this film examines the Making - his blossoming while in South Africa as he faces injustice.
Shyam Benegal's flawless execution echoes in his pen and vision. His script has been written only after so much research was taken to unfold Gandhiji's life in S.A. Hands down the winner is Rajit Kapoor who absolutely mesmerizes. His portrayal of M.K. Gandhi is parallel to that of Ben Kingsley's portrayal in the Hollywood version "Gandhi."
It is a beautiful film that tracks the transformation of the man to the Mahatma. This film should be felt by one and all. Shyam Benegal has created work of art in The Making of The Mahatma. Enjoy this gem for years and years and years to come!

Congrats to Pamela Rooks in creating a film that depicts societal roles in a very majestic and truthful fashion. The film 'Dance Like A Man' is a story that portrays the ruthless pull of gender norms and the irreversibly harmful effects it has on those entrapped by them. Jairaj and Ratna are two very eloquently written characters who through their struggles and attempts to break the gender barriers are left suffocated by them when the film comes to an end.
A part from the shockingly representative theme, the camera work along with art direction are absolutely phoemoneal, not to mention that immaculate choreography. Although anyone would be taken aback by the aesthetic beauty of the film, you cannot help but admire the effort put into Rooks' script.

Vijaya Mehta may be a lesser known film personality to the masses, but is very much known within the fraternity. Eventhough spending lots of time wiht Marathi Theatre, she's come up with a great little film titled Pestonjee.
Backed by a superb cast in Naseer Shah, Anupam Kher, and Shabana Azmi, it's a film that tests the strength of friendship and the plight of human compassion. Stepping away fromt he political issues, which are tackled by many filmmakers in the genre, Mehta focuses more on the personal level, bringing light to the complexity and loyalty of relationships. It is a wonderfully written film. Special mention goes to the camera-
man for giving the film a spectacular look.
