In 1954, filmmaker Samuel Fuller went to Brazil to shoot rough footage for an adventure movie. Though that film was never made, Brazil (and the native Karajá people he encountered there) captured Fuller’s admiration. Forty years later, Fuller returns to Brazil (with fellow filmmaker Jim Jarmusch along for the ride) to renew his ties with the Karajá people. Blurring the lines between documentary and fiction, Mika Kaurismäki’s moving film honors the perseverance of both Fuller and the Karajá.
