The fates of an action-movie celebrity, named Beat Takeshi, and a hard-luck convenience store clerk aspiring to stardom, named Kitano (both played by, you guessed it, "Beat" Takeshi Kitano) converge as the celebrity's real life and the clerk's fantasy life become one. Kitano toys with his action-hero persona, and with the genre in which he's cemented his legend, infusing absurdist humor, while losing none of the operatic, high-powered violence that's become his trademark.

Dolls (ドールズ, Dōruzu?) is a 2002 Japanese film written, edited and directed by Japanese director Takeshi Kitano. A highly stylized art film, Dolls is a departure for Kitano, who normally makes crime films, and unlike most of his other films, he does not act in it. The film has been praised for its cinematography (Katsumi Yanagishima) and features costumes by Yohji Yamamoto.
