The Stranger

The world-renowned Satyajit Ray's final film is, on the surface, a gently paced comedy of Bengali manners, but beneath that, it's a scathing indictment of bourgeois hypocrisy. A well-to-do Calcutta couple (Depanker De and Mamata Shankar) is paid a visit by a mysterious transient (Utpal Dutt) who claims to be the wife's long-lost uncle. Family loyalties conflict with deep suspicion as the couple clumsily and not-so-subtly attempts to determine the stranger's motives and authenticity.
