Stage Beauty

Ned Kynaston (Billy Crudup) is the leading actor in 17th century London when it comes to playing female parts on stage. His portrayals, particularly that of Desdemona in Othello, has gained him notoriety... until King Charles II outlaws the act of a man playing a woman. While Kynaston's career dwindles, the change in law gives his stage hand Maria (Claire Danes) the opportunity to fulfill her lifelong dream of acting. She'll have to train with the begrudged Kynaston if she is to satisfy the king, who has called on her to play the very part he'd evicted Kynaston from. Directed by Sir Richard Eyre.
