At St. Augustine's Catholic school, located in the poorest section of the South Bronx, the sound of music is alive and well and exceedingly powerful. And we’re not talking about Hip Hop and Rap. Six years ago the school was in dire trouble and about to close. In a last-ditch effort, an arts curriculum, emphasizing music, was added to the usual subjects. Its effect has been nothing short of astonishing. Since implementing the curiculum enrollment has tripled and reading and math scores have improved dramatically. More importantly, the students are once again engaged and excited.
