This terrific comedy offered James Cagney a respite from tough guy roles in favor of the singing and dancing that were always his passion. Cagney is Terry Rooney, a Manhattan bandleader lured to Hollywood by a lucrative studio contract. But Terry blanches when the studio demands that he pretend to be single for the sake of his female fans. A personal favorite of Cagney's, the film is boosted by an Oscar-nominated score by writer/director Victor Schertzinger and ubiquitous musical director C. Bakaleinikoff.

Something to Sing About (1937) is the second and final film James Cagney made with Grand National Pictures (the first being Great Guy) before mending relations with and returning to Warner Bros.. It is one of the few films to showcase Cagney's singing and dancing talents. The film flopped in theaters, and caused the closing of Grand National Pictures, which had gone significantly overbudget in the production of this film.

Known as "the picture that broke Grand National". Grand National Pictures, which produced and distributed this film, was a "B" studio known mostly for low-budget westerns and action pictures. It signed James Cagney during one of his frequent disputes with Warner Bros. and saw this picture as its chance to compete with the major studios by doing a lavish musical with a major star. It poured more than $900,000 into this film, not much by MGM or 20th Century Fox standards but a tremendous sum for a small studio like Grand National. Unfortunately the film was a major flop...
