John Wayne plays a legendary gunfighter, John Bernard Books, an outlaw with a terminal illness. He rides into Carson City, Nevada in the hopes of dying quietly, but the Sheriff has other plans for him. John takes a room with Bond Rogers (Lauren Bacall) and her young son, Gillom (Ron Howard), who idolizes the grizzled old gunslinger. When the Sheriff demands a shootout, John decides to go out with a bang.
