The River

World-renowned filmmaker Tsai Ming-liang turns this coming-of-age family drama on its head with a sexually charged urban odyssey that also serves as a scathing commentary on urban isolation and melancholia, ala Antonioni. Xiao-kang is an alienated twenty-something, living at home with his disconnected parents. His mother's taken up with a pornographer and his father, when he isn't trolling the city's gay saunas, is obsessed with their apartment's worsening water leaks from the unit above. Xiao-kang’s life takes a sharp downward turn when, acting as a corpse in the filthy local river for a film shoot, he’s beset by mysterious, crippling neck pain, for which there appears to be no diagnosis or cure.
