Hubert Selby, Jr.’s underground novel of addiction is brought to hyperkinetic life in Darren Aronofsky’s cinematic adaptation. The film traces the gradual descent of four addicts into oblivion as they chase anything that will lift them from their desolate existence. Aronofsky’s visual style captures both the characters’ gritty surroundings and their dreamy hallucinations, and is well balanced by the effective work of his lead actors, particularly Ellyn Burstyn in a devastating, Oscar-nominated performance.

Requiem for a Dream is a 2000 film adaptation of the 1978 novel of the same name. The novel was written by Hubert Selby, Jr.; the film adaptation was directed by Darren Aronofsky, and starred Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly, and Marlon Wayans. Burstyn was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance. The film was screened out of competition at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival.
