Will possession of guns keep law and order or will they only escalate it? Ransom Stoddard (James Stewart) is a pacifist and doesn't carry a gun in this Western. Times are violent and he still refuses believing guns will solve problems. Doniphon (John Wayne) insists guns are the only way to a civil town. Ransom is left for dead by Valance (Lee Marvin) and Valance continues his ruthless actions on the town until Ransom agrees to a shoot out.
