"Romeo and Juliet" meets "Yentl" in this sumptuous musical adaptation of one of China's most enduring folk tales. Betty Loh Ti portrays 4th century maiden Zhu Yingtai, a beauty who so yearns for an education that she disguises herself as a boy in order to attend school, where she meets the dashing Liang Shanbo. Though gender-bender role-playing is traditional in Chinese opera, there is nothing whatsoever old-fashioned about the spectacular screen treatment given to this all-time classic.
