Kukumi

The first film out of Kosovo since being declared a U.N.-protected “mission.”

Kosovo 1999. NATO forces have effectively stopped the Serbian attacks and Serb soldiers are on the run, including guards of a mental hospital where Kukumi, Mara, and Hasan have been inmates for years. With the doors now opened wide, the trio of innocents wanders out into the devastated landscape, eager to explore their newfound world of freedom. They soon discover that while Kosovo may be free of Serbs, old hatreds and intolerance among the populace remain deeply entrenched and dangerous. Seeking refuge in Hasan’s brother’s village, the threesome set up house in an old barn. But when word gets out that there are crazies in their mix, the villagers brutally drive them out. Even Hasan’s brother turns cruelly against them. In a supposedly liberated country, Kukumi, Mara, and Hasan have no place they can go.
