Russian Captain Marko Ramius (Sean Connery) has stolen a technologically superior submarine and pointed it at U.S. shores. It's up to Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin) to find him and stop him before he attacks. When evidence arises that suggests Ramius is defecting, Ryan must convince the Navy that he's not a threat before they (or the entire Russian fleet) destroy him and his crew. Based on a novel by Tom Clancy.
