Eddie "Fingers" Coyle (Robert Mitchum) never quite makes it up the ranks in his criminal life style. No one likes a snitch and Eddie is in a dilemma as the law will get him off his pending prison sentence if he works with them. He'll still be able to provide for his wife and child and going back to prison is the last thing Eddie wants in his life. Nothing is as easy as it seems when others in his circle of criminal friends may be working with the law as well.
