Richard Harris almost took home an Oscar for his portrayal of 'Bull' McCabe, an Irish farmer who's family has been tending a piece of land for generations. When the owner of the plot can no longer maintain her land, she puts it up for sale in public auction. Knowing that nobody would be foolish enough to take the family land from McCabe, the townsfolk withhold their bids--only for a cocky American outsider (Tom Beringer) to attempt to outbid him. This results in a fierce rivalry, which threatens to unlock the darkest secrets from McCabe's past.

The Field is a play written by John B. Keane, first performed in 1965. It was adapted into a film in 1990 by Jim Sheridan. It tells the story of the hardened farmer "Bull" McCabe and his love for the land he rents. The play debuted at Dublin's Olympia Theatre in 1965, with Ray McAnally as "The Bull" and Eamon Keane as the "The Bird" O'Donnell. The play was published in 1967 by Mercier Press. A new version with some changes was produced in 1987.
