"Beautiful!" - Roberta Munroe of Sundance Film Festival
"Sensual!!" - Bennington Museum
"I Was A Dancer " comes from the cinema verite tradition of filmmaking. Much in the style of Werner Herzog, Whiton made documentary-like observations on the streets in northern Japan during a traditional festival and then created a fictional narrative in the editing room. By focusing on an elderly woman's reaction, the end of this art piece becomes a testimony of memories for the character. Whiton also composed the music for the piece, which includes the mournful sound of Shakuhachi flute and a master Biwa player.
