Less sensational than other 1930s drug/sex scare films, Damaged Lives remains an effective and noteworthy effort. The story concerns an up-and-coming businessman, whose one-time fling at a brother cast a long, dark shadow over his life and his family. The first solo filmmaking effort by Edgar G. Ulmer (Detour, The Black Cat), Damaged Lives offers a less hysterical but still fascinating look at the mores of the times.

Damaged Lives is an American exploitation film produced by Columbia Pictures and directed by Edgar G. Ulmer about a couple that contracts a venereal disease. Filmed in 1933, this cautionary tale was not released in America until 1937. The film involves an extramarital encounter that nearly leads the wife of the main character into killing herself and her husband. The film was produced under the name Weldon Pictures, because Columbia did not want to be associated with the topic of the film.

Weldon Pictures was a dummy company set up by Columbia, which didn't want to be associated with the film's topic, syphilis. Producer Nat Cohn was the brother of Columbia's head, Harry Cohn.
