Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway in one of the greatest films of all time. Nicholson plays J. J. Gittes who is hired to spy on an engineer for the water department to get proof that he's cheating on his wife. The case heats up when Gittes finds out he wasn't hired by the wife of the engineer and there's scandal going on with the water department. The story weaves a web of deceit, murder, incest and corrupt city officials.

The plot is based in part on real events that formed the California Water Wars, in which William Mulholland acted on behalf of Los Angeles interests to secure water rights in the Owens Valley.
