This film chronicles filmmaker Yelena Zmushko's personal search for the truth behind Chernobyl's nuclear disaster in 1986. 20 years after surviving the horrific event, Zmushko returns to Belarus to find that Chernobyl is still shrouded in secrecy. The far-reaching effects of the radioactive exposure are revealed through interviews with experts and current residents, but perhaps most remarkably is that Zmushko captures the human instinct to survive which fully depends on the ability to hope.
