Mani Ratman's powerful film examines Hindu/Muslim tensions via a moving love story. The film begins as a romantic drama, depicting the growing love between a Hindu man (Arvind Swamy) and a Muslim woman (Manisha Koirala). Shunned by their village and their family, the couple flees to Mumbai to marry. The film becomes a near documentary as it portrays the Hindu/Muslim conflict that rocked Mumbai in the early 1990s. Ratman’s film caused controversy upon its release, and remains powerful today.
