The year is 1890. Two brothers, Schuyler and Osbourne Crawl, have just been told by their dying father, Troy, that a curse had been placed on his immortal soul. He begs them to journey to the site of an American-Indian encampment where years before, he was involved in the brutal massacre of native innocents. One of the fallen victims, a woman Troy will only refer to as Black Eyed Sue, cursed him as she lay dying. She said that his soul would forever be in torment unless one of his two infant sons sacrifices themselves to her upon Troy's death. As long as this task is accomplished, Troy's soul would be free, and the surviving son would live on and become an important man. Having spent their entire lives obeying their father's every command without question, Schuyler and Osbourne naively set out to undertake this grisly task.
As the heat of the desert sun begins to wear the brothers down, the hidden animosity between them begins to surface. Osbourne, the eldest and more physically imposing of the two, pushes on with relentless focus while Schuyler, crippled and weak-framed, begins to question the validity of their father's deathbed tale. Their relationship is pushed to its limit, and it soon becomes questionable whether the brothers will kill themselves or each other. Ultimately, one of them will die, and one will have to carry on alone to fulfill Sue's prophecy. But at what cost?
