Among Indian cinema’s pantheon actor-directors, Guru Dutt stars in this unlikely and uplifting romance between the simple-minded Raghu (Dutt) and the no-nonsense village girl, Padma (Mala Sinha). Raghu finds himself under the thumb of his domineering stepmother (Lalita Prawar), and his bullying half-brother, Vikram (Feroz Kahn). Their reign of terror is soon challenged when Padma and Raghu marry. Inspired by her love and fearlessness, Raghu begins to find the courage to resist his oppressors.
