In the ultimate underdog feel-good movie of the 70s comes the worst Little League team in Southern California. A washed up minor-leaguer, Morris Buttermaker (Walter Matthau), takes to coaching the Bears, a small-time team of no-talent, oddball kids. When Coach Buttermaker adds a girl-pitcher to the lineup, the future starts to brighten as their chance to enter the championships looms on the horizon.

The Bad News Bears is a 1976 film directed by Michael Ritchie. It stars Walter Matthau and Tatum O'Neal. The film was followed by two sequels, The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training in 1977 and The Bad News Bears Go to Japan in 1978 and a short-lived 1979-80 CBS television series . Also notable was the score by Jerry Fielding, which is an adaptation of the principal themes of Carmen.

Bill Lancaster's screenplay was based on his experiences with his father, Burt Lancaster. Buttermaker was based on Burt, who was known for his grumpiness and the character of Amanda was based on himself. Burt Lanacster would later be cast as an aged version of early 20th Century ballplayer, Archibald "Moonlight" Graham in Field of Dreams (1989).
