“Quite possibly Ferrara's finest hour, with an almost unbearably sincere performance from Keitel.”—Empire
Abel Ferrara’s gritty 1992 opus propelled actor Harvey Keitel to indie stardom. Keitel bares body and soul as a corrupt New York police lieutenant, completely strung out on drugs and alcohol, and deeply in debt. When the lieutenant is assigned to investigate the brutal rape of a nun (Frankie Thorn), he is baffled when she forgives her attackers. His search for the perpetrators becomes a frantic scramble for his own redemption. Bad Lieutenant poses serious questions, and still packs a punch.
