"An almost perfect miniature of mood and feelings, the cinematic equivalent of a haiku poem…it recalls ‘60s European cinema in its freshness and innocence." -- Variety
Acclaimed director Shunji Iwai takes the viewer on an emotional, inward voyage of youth and love. Izuki (Takako Matsu) bids goodbye to her family in Hokkaido and climbs on a train bound for Tokyo to attend university. She arrives in a new city, a new apartment, and has a secret motivation. As she navigates the landscape of her unfamiliar world she is questioned about her real reason for moving to Tokyo. The mystery might involve the young man at her local bookstore rather than the pursuit of a higher education.
