In this beautifully filmed tale of Paganism versus Christianity in the Middle Ages, a young girl, after having a vision of the Virgin Mary, is designated an Anchoress and willfully walled into a small, confining space, to spend the rest of her life as a recluse. But soon her awakening sexuality disrupts the staid nature of the established order, throwing both the government and the Church into turmoil.
