In perfect 1950s American suburbia lives a Hungarian immigrant family, torn apart by the Cold War. Margit (Nastassja Kinski) and Peter (Tony Goldwyn) left behind their 6 year old daughter, Zsuzsi (Scarlett Johansson), to be raised by foster parents in Hungary. When she turns 15, they send for her to live with them in Los Angeles. When Szuszi arrives, culture shock, teenage rebellion and identity issues arise. She must come to terms with her new life, or decide to return for a life behind the Iron Curtain.

Trivia:
Éva Gárdos met actress Colleen Camp on the set of Apocalypse Now (1979), when she was a casting director for the film. During shooting breaks, Éva told Colleen her true story of her childhood as a Hungarian émigré and Colleen encouraged her to turn it into a film. Colleen Camp would ultimately help produce the film, and played a small role in it as a neighborhood housewife.
