This quirky and exciting film recreates a bizarre incident in which singer Frank Sinatra was taken hostage during a comeback tour. Dennis Hopper plays Sinatra, who is convinced by flashy young promoter Rod Blue (Joel Edgerton) to perform several dates in Australia. But when Sinatra takes umbrage to questions asked by a local gossip columnist (Portia di Rossi), his insults lead to a conflict with the local unions, who take Ol’ Blue Eyes hostage until he apologizes.

The Night We Called It a Day (2003) is an Australian film directed by Peter Clifton starring Dennis Hopper, Melanie Griffith, Portia de Rossi, Joel Edgerton, Rose Byrne, and David Hemmings. It is based on the true events surrounding one of several tours of Frank Sinatra (played by Hopper) in Australia. When Sinatra calls a local reporter (Rossi) a "two-bit hooker", every union in the country black-bans the star until he issues an apology.

Anachronisms: There are a number of anachronisms in the Sydney backdrops, ostensibly set in the 1970s. The most obvious is the catamaran harbour ferry that crosses the screen, in an early night-time shot of the harbour bridge. These were not introduced until 15 years later in 1988.
