Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker unleashed an entire sub-genre of comedy with this hilarious spoof of disaster movies. The gags never stop as a commercial airliner, its crew incapacitated, flies headlong toward disaster. The only hope is a traumatized military pilot (Robert Hays) who must swallow his fear to bring the doomed airplane’s passengers to safety. The film’s supporting cast is made up of disaster movie veterans, all gamely lampooning their previous work in the genre.

Airplane! is an American satirical comedy film directed and written by David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker and released by Paramount Pictures. It stars Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty and features Leslie Nielsen, Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Lorna Patterson. The film is a spoof of the disaster film genre, and is essentially a remake of the 1957 Paramount film Zero Hour!. In Australia and New Zealand the film is known as Flying High.

Trivia:
Universal threatened to sue when they found out that the directors were trying to get Helen Reddy to repeat her role as the singing nun from Airport 1975 (1974). George Kennedy from the original Airport movies was also being courted for the film but thought better of running afoul of Universal.
