I was just about to write a raving review about Slumdog Millionaire after watching it this weekend. I thought it was a story well-told and I was very touched and moved by it. But then I just read this article today on Time.com that says although the movie is praised here in the US, it's barely tolerable in India because it is too close to reality and therefore is not "entertaining".
Good article Biaozeebub. I think in the end, it's all about what you prefer to watch. Do you want to escape and be entertained or do you want to learn and be enlightened? Slumdog Millionaire certainly doesn't escape reality. I'm not Indian but I did grown up in a 3rd world country on the poor/middleclass side of things, and if it were a film portraying poverty in my country, I'd be all for it. It's better to expose and make people aware rather than to hide the truth for the sake of "entertainment".
Though Slumdog has got great production values, I don't believe it’s a genuine depiction of reality. I think it's got a fairytale ending. In fact there are some Indian movies which surpass the real life depiction of SlumDog… For insance Mumbai Meri Jaan or A Wednesday. Recently I went for the preview of Barah Aana... another well made flick which borders on real life situations and the destiny of three commonplace Indian guys. The story is really gripping. It borders on dry comedy and the plot entwines a series of surprises. Very strong performances by Naseeruddin Shah and Vijay Raaz. Check out http://barah-aana-the-film.blogspot.com/ to know more about the movie and cast. Its yet to release, but I am sure it'll attract a lot of audience and rave reviews from the fraternity after release.
here the issue is not about hit here in India or abroad, the film is gud to watch and the film is not a commercial film and comming to india unless u have a star cast u cant even try to share the movie name when u think about watching movie.,
so askar eyes and indian eyes are not the same
to be very frank indian need a mass massala superb films .
The film shows the reality of India, it is not the first film, which is nearer reality but Indian film makers are also shown the poority of India.

Yeah, I agree with that. Although there are really movies that are offending, but the case is, we just have to face the reality that there are really cities in a certain countries were poverty is really a big problem and we can't just lame the facts that it's a good issue to be talked and sometimes used for somehow we could relate and at the same time, we could learn from it. But although, sometimes it just adds up to poor people's frustrations. Even myself, we're not that rich but we're just in a stage where we could eat three times a day, and everytime I came to watch films depicting poverty I was also hurt. That's why I get to understand the feelings of these people that we're affected by that film.
