That's an excellent question. Unfortunately, some of the underlying technologies, most importantly QuickTime 7, don't support Linux. This means that adding a Linux version is not on our radar at the moment. Sorry, I know that's a bummer.
Could mplayer or vlc be used from within the Jaman Player? We don't have problems viewing either a *.mov file or online quicktime. Please reconsider or work with codeweavers on the idea.
I am definitely looking for a linux player. I have quicktime 7 installed via WINE, and i'm in the process of testing it, but I know I can open .Mov filed with mplayer, VLC, and several other players.
I'm sure you know how the story goes--- with limited resources, we can't immediately afford to support the not-quite-mainstream platforms. Maybe when we're fat cats with programmer armies and cappuccino machines, we'll get an intern to make a Linux version.
The same story here. I signed up after I got an offer with my Salon.com subscription, but now I have found out that there is no support for Linux. I do understand the motives, and unfortunately Linux is a niche, but any developments in making Jaman available to Linux users would be greatly appreciated.
Yeah, I hear ya sndrspk. I wish we could have a Linux version, but we just don't have the surplus development time to allow that option right now. Hopefully someday.
I tried using WINE a while back, but I think I had an old version of quicktime -- so it didn't really work out for me. I'll probably try to play around w/ it again and see if I make any headway. If anyone has had any luck w/ WINE and the Jaman Player, any advice that you can contribute would go a long way.
My laptop I was watching Jaman videos on broke. I'm building a new computer and because I can't afford an XP license I will only be putting Linux on it. Sad to hear there is no workaround for this.
One thing that Jaman might put on the to-do list, instead of a Linux player with all the native codec/DRM programming you'd have to do for that, is a Flash player that would work in any web browser. Movies are big and all, but I would appreciate being able to watch miniature versions without having to pirate a copy of Windows.
