Gene Kelly vs Fred Astaire

Ok so everyone I know who loves Hollywood musicals tends to love EITHER Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly and it's practically sacriledge to like both (like I do). Personally I thinkg Fred brings grace and beauty and Gene brings joy and athleticism. It's kinda like comparing Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra - they're both awesome and bring their particular panache and expertise to the table. Anyway - which one is your favorite? And is there a rivalry like this for musicals that aren't American? I love the passion musicals bring out in people. Quick, please tell me your stories!

Gotta be Gene Kelley. No offense, but there's nothing sexy about Fred Astaire. He's a brilliant dancer and great actor, but for me Gene Kelley is much more fun to watch. I got hooked on the movies after watching 'Singing in the Rain' in a classic theater as a kid and never looked back. He's funny, sexy.. your best friend and biggest crush. He can be goofy one minute (Roses are Red) and reel you in the next (You are My Lucky Star). He's makes a musical completely come together and makes it fun to watch time after time after time.

I'm not a huge fan of old-style American musicals but Gene Kelley is the man.

Like Suuzuu, I can appreciate Fred Astaire's artistry and grace but it's a little disconcerting to see a man who always looks considerably older than his leading ladies. And usually, he is the love interest, not a father figure or mentor.

I was not amused to see him sweeping Audrey Hepburn off her feet in Funny Face. What a great story (mousy bookseller becomes model when a photographer spots her among her musty shelves of books -- what else?) but I just couldn't get excited over Fred and Audrey doing that romantic spin in the last scene of the movie. I was wailing inside for a male partner who was a bit more . . . . rakish.

Fred Astaire's success on the screen means that audiences are far more gracious than I am when it comes to putting together May-December romances on the screen. But I just don't find this formula very original. I get bored, my mind wanders. My mind, however, doesn't wander when I see the grinning face of Gene Kelley.

My idea of an uber-male dancer is Antonio Gades from Carlos Saura's "Carmen." Flamenco dancer by training and not one who's easiest on the eyes, but, BUT, once his heels slams against the wooden floors, I dare you not to find him hot. He burns with pure passionate intensity.

There are two ladies in the film that rip through the screen with their dancing but it's pretty clear to most flamenco aficionados that it's reedy mature Cristina Hoyos who is the spitfire against the younger beauty, Laura del Sol.

My favorite is definitely Gene Kelly, there's something so completely charming and charismatic about him. I remember liking Anchor's Aweigh with him and Frank Sinatra quite a bit, and of course, Singing in the Rain is a classic! ... makes me miss those family movie nights growing up!

I'm sacrilegious. I honestly love both, and deciding between them would cause a "Sophie's Choice" worthy moment. (ok, perhaps not quite that dramatic...close!). Astaire is glamorous and suave, Kelly is powerful and magnetic. Astaire floated along in top hats and tails, Kelly could rock the flannel and still be completely palatable. Astaire is remarkable in "The Towering Inferno", Kelly directed "Hello Dolly". I love "Holiday Inn" and I love "Singing in the Rain". Both extraordinary showmen are given shout outs in "Vogue" (the song). I feel I am in good company in my impartiality (after all, If Madge can do it....). Although, if I absolutely HAD to chose only one poster to hang on my wall, It'd be of Kelly.

I definitely have to jump in on this one! Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly differ in such a way, as to transport you to different places. If you are in the 'want to be out and about on New Year's Eve' kind of mood, your man is definitely Fred Astaire. He evokes feelings of being at the Waldorf or the Ritz. If you want to go 'native', and are in the 'take me to exotic places' kind of mood, then Gene Kelly is definitely the way to go. Remember his movie' Pirate'. Truly one to watch. Kelly at his best. Hey Jaman heres one to offer us Kelly fans! But believe me, there is no sacriledge in liking both! That's the nature of entertainment. It allows us-for a short time-to escape our woes, without guilt. And it is the diversity of the actors and the content that provides us with this wondreful diversion from reality. This diversity can only be achieved by a broad spectrum of personalities, to bring the characters portrayed by such icons as Kelly and Astaire to life, to such a degree, that it continues to generate discussions such as these, long after their passing.Imagine how dull it would be if they brought the same flavor to the screen or stage. Remember the of the masks of the smile and the frown which are the embodiement of what screen and theatre are supposed to bring to the table, as well as every emotion in between. It is for this reason that we should not pit one against the other, but rather enjoy each of their particular brand of genius as each new character they portray continues to entertain us through the decades and beyond.
