There's been a recent bit of activity on the Musicals-Turned-Movies front, Sweeney Todd and Hairspray being the more known examples. I'm just curious what people think: what musicals should be turned into movies?
Personally, I'd love to see more of Stephen Sondheim's work adapted to film. Into The Woods would be at the top of that list for me... it's like a big mixing bowl with a bunch of fairy tales thrown in and stirred vigorously with a dash of awesome.
Another great Sondheim musical is Assassins. It's all about folks who've tried (or succeeded) to assassinate the President of the United States. The concept is bizarre, but once again the music pulls it all together and somehow makes ot work.
(The clip doesn't do the show justice.)
Anyway, those are mine. What do you think?
i think a pulp fiction musical would be kind of amazing.
or maybe heathers. take some sort of twisted uber violence and throw a few good dance numbers on it - the juxtaposition would be amazing.
Don't forget Mama Mia! -- Musical turned movie. My favorite has to be Hairspray -- because it was a movie that turned into a musical that turned into a movie. I think John Waters is just playing with us.
How about turning Starlight Express into a movie? Or Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
None. I liked Chicago and Moulin Rogue, but frankly, I can't take anymore at least for a while. The novelty is gone for me. If I wanted to see a musical on the big screen, I would go to Ticketmaster. I would rather have a good soundtrack... remember The Bodyguard guys, number one selling soundtrack of all time. I rest my case.
Hmmmm....I think "Wicked" is probably inevitable (not complaining, I love it). I'd love to see "Spring Awakening" and "The Heights", but only if they're done well....because, frankly, "Rent" was disappointing. I wonder if "Xanadu" will be re-done...Or how about "Legally Blonde" as another movie-turned musical-turned movie? OMG, omg you guys!
As I wrote in my reply to the forum on Fred Astaire vs. Gene Kelly. I would like to see the movie/musical 'Pirate' with Gene Kelly and Judy Garland. Incredible acting, tremendous chemestry between the two, good story line, and extremely entertaining. Also one the whole family can watch.
