Would anyone like to see more films from the Middle East, Africa and "the Stans"?
There are some great films from Palestine, Israel, Yemen, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan to name some places I have enjoyed films from. I know there are good films about and by Pakistanis, Kazakhstan, and other "Stans". I really appreciate seeing the many human sides (portrayed in the films) of these countries when the political side is what is usually in our faces. Seattle has some great film connections and these people come out for the Seattle International Film Festival in June and the Arab and Iranian Film Festival (maybe this year combined with SIFF). Film directors and producers are also all over Seattle during SIFF. For example, last year I saw "A New Day in Old Sanaa" - one of the first contemporary films partially funded by the Yemeni Government which was persuaded by a Yemeni filmmaker living in London. The filmmaker was at the showing and I learned quite a lot about Yemen and Sanaa and how hard it was to get funding by watching this interesting film and meeting the film-maker. I even would like to visit Sanaa or maybe work there, now that I saw it in the film and saw the Yemeni filmmaker. Before that, Yemen was sort of a gray area on a map of the Arabian Peninsula to me. So I would like to see some films from the Middle East, Africa and "the Stans".

I wrote this request 12 months ago. Since then, Jaman has added many films from the Middle East, Africa and "the Stans" (Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan..) and I have watched many of them. You can find them by clicking on "Discover Movies" tab at the top of this page. Then in the upper left, find "World Map", click it and you can find films from any part of the world (however, not all films are available to people anywhere in the world - but many are). Also, go to my profile and see my reviews of films - to see if any appeal to you.

I got turned onto Middle Eastern and North African films while living in Paris. Many of my friends were from Algeria, Iran, Tunisia, etc., and they would introduce me to films that I would never encounter in the U.S. through traditional film distribution channels.

While living there, I was lucky enough to see the colorful "Le Destin" of Youssef Chahine and the philosophical and highly memorable "Le Goût de la cerise" of Abbas Kiarostami. I have a soft spot for Kiarostami even though I may not spell his name correctly every time.

It put me on a trajectory of searching for great films from this part of the world and if you're curious to test out more, see if you can get a hold of these titles:

Leila by Dariush Mehrjui

Children of Heaven by Majid Majidi

Hamam by Ferzan Ozpetek

The Circle by Jafar Panahi

Gabbeh by Mohsen Makhmalbaf

Walk on Water by Eitan Fox

Kadosh by Amos Gitai

Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi

And this is just a mere sampling. However, it will give you a solid lead into the wide range of topics that interest directors from this part of the world: family drama, children's story, fairytales, women's rights, gay life, political vengeance, song-and-dance melodrama, battle for emancipation, etc.
