Movies of the first half of last century

In the 1930s and 40s the portrayal of a character mainly depended on the acting skill and artistry in editing the film. I purposely left out the role of the Director as it is inevitable and an editor could easily mess up the outcome if the person is careless. Could someone compare the simple films of the nature of Desperate Hours and We are No Angels, to begin with, with those of the movies released just prior to those presented with the advent of digital cameras. Thank you.
