I hate to say that I hardly ever go to the movies any more because I really do not like the hollywood big budget action crap that they are constantly shoving down people's throat, as if everyone is a mindless zombie. I am happiest when I am watching a foreign or Indy film, which usually gets no play (other then the small arts cinemas, which are usually in a part of town that NO one wants to go to).
Foreign and Indy films are better because they usually have more intellectual and artist substance and involve a storyline that has nothing to do with blowing up some stupid thing every 5 to 10 mins.
That's really a big question. Are indie and foreign films consistently better than Hollywood's stuff? No, I wouldn't necessarily say so. But independent filmmakers produce different kinds of pictures, often riskier and more demanding upon the viewer. When a big-budget Hollywood epic gets green-lit and goes into production, there has to be as little financial risk involved as possible, so they often rely upon tried and true formulas (ever read Syd Field's screenwriting book?). So they have Will Smith blowing up a car and walking casually away in super slow motion while the wreckage burns in the background, because it's a cool looking shot, and it looks great in the previews.
But I think Spielberg's movies are an example of Hollywood films done right. He's choosy about his scripts and works closely with the writers, and even the worst Spielberg film is worth the price of admission. Michael Bay might make similar films, but his movies wont last because the focus is on the spectacle rather than the story.
Anyway, non-Hollywood films are smaller budgeted so there's not $100 million at stake, and thus non-traditional stories are pursued, or the pacing can be slow... or whatever. People who are making films outside of Hollywood are probably in it because they just love movies, and I think that devotion can be seen. Of course there's also a lot of boring, amateurish independent movies that fall flat.
I think that the line between Hollywood and Indie just keeps shifting though. Like are the Coen Brothers still artsy / indie because they have such a singular and unique vision. Or are they Hollywood because they release through major studios and won a Best Picture Oscar? And Tarantino where does he fall? Seems to me like even indie has become completely commodified in a way. Just a different spin on marketing. It's when I watch the actual films themselves that the art comes through and sometimes that pops up even in the Blockbuters like The Dark Knight.
The special effects in animation and graphics that are using now a days in Hollywood or Indian cinemas makes the movies boring, I can't see the action that were in olden movies. No climax in the movies, the stories so boring that when you have a 5 min movie watch you can understand the story, this is the reason which makes now a days movies boring. The cinema halls become the place to get relaxed from work pressure, and it not for entertainment.
WE DON'T WANT THINKERS ON THE JOB AND IN SOCIETY. THEREFORE, MAKE PEOPLE FEEL SHALLOW BY "SHOVING DOWN USELESS MATERIAL DOWN THEIR THROATS."
THINKERS ARE INTO CREATIVITY, CHANGE, EVEN OPPOSITION. THE MOVIE-MAKERS ARE PAID TOP DOLLAR TO CRANK OUT CRAPPY MOVIES THAT BRAINWASH AND NUMB OUR MINDS, SO THAT WE COULD TOLERATE ANOTHER YEAR OF MIND-STRESS AT THE JOB AND AT HOME.
And it costs like 30 bucks every time you go to the theater. Popcorn.....$5.99. Large Soda.....$4.99. Movie Ticket.....$10.00. Ticket for your girl.....$10.00. Falling asleep while watching a crappy movie.....WORTHLESS!
